St. Paul's College History

St. Paul's College began as a one-room parochial school founded by a newly ordained Episcopal deacon, the Rev. James Solomon Russell, to provide the only education available to blacks in southside Virginia.  By 1888, it had grown into a Normal and Industrial School, and in 1941, Saint Paul's granted its first baccalaureate degrees.  The campus is located on a 600-acre rolling countryside tract in the town of Lawrenceville, in Brunswick County, Virginia, about 75 miles southeast of Richmond.  Three of its historic buildings, including the beautiful Memorial Chapel (circa 1904), are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, St. Paul's is a private, accredited, coeducational four-year liberal arts institution, fostering an environment in which the attributes of integrity, objectivity, resourcefulness, scholarship, and responsible citizenship are emphasized.  Its liberal arts, career-oriented business, science and teacher-education programs prepare graduates for effective participation in various fields of human endeavor.  The College is small, yet its students represent several foreign countries and many diverse areas in the U. S.  The active campus life is characterized by a strong sense of camaraderie.

Saint Paul's offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice, English, General Studies, Political Science, and Sociology.  The Bachelor of Science degree is available in Aquatic Science and Aquaculture, Biology, Business Administration, Environmental Science, Mathematics, and Office Administration.  To expand the career options for its students, the college is developing a regional Aquaculture Demonstration site to augment its academic program.  Additionally, a campus based Rural Business and Economic Development Project offers unique student experiences.  Internships, coordinated by a fully-staffed Career Planning and Placement Office, as well as a cooperative Education Program, are available as integral parts of the curriculum.  Students have interned in Washington at the White House, the U. S. Congress, and in Virginia, in the Office of the Governor.
