Town of

Lawrenceville,

Virginia

Lawrenceville, the county seat of Brunswick County, was created by an act of the General Assembly in 1814. Legend has it that the town was named after a famous race horse, Lawrence, owned by a large landowner who built a race track near the end of the 18th century. Now, some 180 years later, horse racing has returned with the completion of an Off Tract Betting Center by Colonial Downs in Alberta, near Lawrenceville.

The majority of the buildings in Lawrenceville, commercial, residential and governmental, are 19th and early 20th century structures.  They are now designated as a National Register Historic District.
